"In Douro we can contemplate some of the most stunning views in the world..."

In Douro we can contemplate some of the most stunning views in the world. Régua is situated at the confluence of the Corgo and Douro rivers. This small town once the historical centre of Port trade is now a place where you can take a train ride or a boat cruise. It is possible to see barcos rabelos, old Port warehouses upstream and the sloping vineyards, all with the river for a background - it's an experience you won't forget. Mesão Frio south of Régua is a little fortified village which marks the beginning of the Douro wine region. In Vila Real, the region's capital, you should visit nearby Casa de Mateus, the stunning 17th century manor house and its gardens. Going up the hills you will find Sabrosa, a small village where you can still see several 15th century manor houses. This is also the birthplace of Fernão de Magalhães, who led the first round the world sailing voyage in the early 16th century. Near Sabrosa is Favaios and Alijó, two fairly large villages. Enjoy the roads, through the rocky hills, with spectacular views over the fields, with vines, olive and citrus trees. In the confluence of the Pinhão and Douro rivers, appears the lovely small riverside town of Pinhão, the heart of Port wine. You can't miss its railway station, which walls are decorated with Portuguese tiles (azulejos) showing scenes from the harvests and the river before the dams. Places you just that can't miss!
